Eva’s story
Eva Berry is a second-year student of History and International Relations at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Eva was born and raised in NYC and has had a lifelong passion for history, but she recently connected it with her family’s history and the stories she found were incredible. She is the daughter of two immigrants, one Mexican-American and the other Bulgarian, and when she began to research, she discovered that behind the seemingly ordinary places her family had ended up were extraordinary explanations for how they had gotten there.
One of Eva’s favorite parts of history—and one of her primary goals in researching it—have always been the untold stories. There’s so much depth in history that it’s easy to gloss over remarkable individuals and events when you're following a curriculum. She often found her interest piqued in subjects she couldn’t afford more than a day on. Conducting research on her own, Eva learned about and created two documentaries for National History Day in the US: one on the role of women in the Mexican Revolution and another on NYC’s cabaret laws and their outdated abuse by city government in the 90s, which won recognition on the city and state levels respectively. That experience opened her eyes to how many forgotten stories are waiting to be told and how many individuals are worth remembering.
There’s a belief in Mexico that a person dies three times. The first is when a person realizes their mortality. The second is when they take their last breath. But the third is the last time someone on Earth speaks their name aloud. When Eva began to research her family’s history, she realized how many exceptional people were on the brink of their last death. History is about people, their stories, and preserving them. And in doing so, injecting life back into the past, bringing it into the present, and passing it on to future generations. That is her mission and it is the mission of GetYourHistory: to allow others to pass on that gift to their family.
“Preserve your family’s story. Discover the people who came before you. Leave your children their history.”
